Coolest. Job. Ever.

This week my organ procurement journeys took me up to Detroit, where I was reminded that I have a really freakin’ awesome job.  The day started with the news that we would be leaving the hospital at noon for a procurement in Michigan, so when the time came, I traveled with my attending and med […]

Bowling for dollars

This week has been crazy busy, with very little time to vegetate.  If it’s not work with the transplant service, it’s my burgeoning social calendar.  Transplants have really picked up this week, and I’ve flown to Evansville and Fort Wayne to do procurements.  The stories behind the patients from whom we procure are unfortunate and […]

It’s all good

The past week and a half has been terrific!   Work seems to be treating me very well - better than I could have hoped, in fact.  Now that both transplant fellows are back in town, my role on the service is mostly to round on the ICU patients in the morning, operate all day, and […]

Who says I never go anywhere?

So I had finished dinner and was about to nap when I get the page for an organ procurement… in Cleveland!  It looks like I’ll be at my old stomping grounds tonight, but only for a short while.

***Addendum***
So the Cleveland Clinic decided it wanted the liver after all, so we let them have it.  So […]

Puppy update

Wake up and get to work!

Today I started on the transplant service.  Usually, when one moves to another surgical service, one rolls into the hospital at 6 AM, makes rounds, heads to the OR for cases, does the cases, comes up for any loose ends/followups, and goes home.  At least, this is what I expected.
What I didn’t expect is to […]

Chuckle

I checked the dictation transcription on a CT scan for one of my male (you know, a man, A.K.A. a dude) patients, and found the following passage:
The uterus and ovaries are not visualized and have presumably been surgically removed.

Man, that was some surgery!  All we did was operate on his stomach, but we may […]

Calling in sick

Ugh.  Today I called in sick because I’ve been feeling like crap all yesterday evening to this morning.  Yesterday started out as a really good day.  Since I had no cases, I went up north to the new Clarian North Hospital to help out one of my attendings do several surgeries.  I was most impressed […]
