Freedom!

Yesterday I got my requisite day off after 2 weeks of working long hours and being chronically fatigued.  When the typical work day starts at 5:30 AM and ends at 8 PM, you tend to feel tired.  Such is the life of a surgery resident.  As someone once said, residents are like Oriental rugs - […]

Strange sartorial tastes

Today I received the suit and sport coat that I bought in Toledo.  Now that they’re altered, they fit quite well and make me look somewhat less dorky than usual.  In my later years (viz., the years that I’ve actually been making money), I’ve been using my wardrobe to project a certain image.  Like my […]

When work stops being fun

This has been a crappy week for work.  Morning rounds at 5:30 AM.  On call Monday.  Wednesday I get out at 9 PM.  Thursday I get out at 10 PM.  In comparison, getting out at 7 PM tonight seems like a vacation.  Granted, I’ve gotten to scrub in on some amazing cases - we assisted […]

So very, very, very tired

Well, vacation is over with and so is my brief run at being a normal person.  I’m happy to say I had a relaxing, fun time off, and coming back to work was a little bit of a shock to my system as my days on this service start at 5:30 AM.  During the break, […]

O Canada, my home and native land

This weekend I was supposed to visit my friend Peter in Pittsburgh (which sounds like someone who would write to Ann Landers for advice), but he had to cancel due to work.  Instead, I went home to Toledo to visit the ‘rents (parents for those of you not hip to the lingo the kids are […]

My life is filled with awesomeness

I had an eye exam today.  Now, I hate going to the doctor for anything (ironic, huh?), much less having someone stick his or her fingers anywhere near my eyes.  There’s a reason I’ve never worn contacts.  However, this session was relatively benign, despite the need to dilate my eyes for the fundoscopic exam.  The […]

Vacation?!

Today was a working day.  Not at the hospital, but at home.  You see, with the studying and fretting about my inservice exam in January, I totally neglected my house.  And I couldn’t clean it during Chinese New Year, because sweeping and vacuuming are verboten lest one sweep away good fortune.  So today is my […]

*Drool*

I took my car, an 8 year old Ford Contour, in for service today because of
a "check engine" idiot light that has been on for months.  Turned out to be relatively minor - the car needed fuel injector service and PCV valve replacement, but the bill for the repair was $250!  When I’m throwing money […]

A riddle

Question: How many surgery residents does it take to organize a Super Bowl party?
Answer: None.  They’re all on call.
Eh, it’s not like it’s that big of a deal anyway.  Here in Indianapolis, there’s a bit of a low-key attitude about Super Bowl XL (although I would wear a Super Bowl M) for obvious reasons.

Hardly graceful

One of my newest friends, Robyn from the Indy Hub organization, invited me to an ice skating party.  Now, it has been probably about 20+ years since I’ve set foot in an ice skating rink (the floor of Joe Louis Arena during the auto show in Detroit notwithstanding), so I was a little hesitant to […]
